Exploring the intersection of gaming, food, and social connections
Our flagship research project explores why gaming venues that combine food, board games, and computer gaming create stronger community bonds than traditional arcades or cafes alone. Over the past three years, we've surveyed more than 5,000 gamers about their social experiences and found that multi-activity venues like Chicken Road create 73% more meaningful friendships than single-activity venues. This research has been featured in Gaming Psychology Quarterly and several industry conferences.
The study revealed that the combination of digital and analog gaming experiences, alongside communal eating, creates a unique neurological response that enhances social connection and memory formation. These findings have influenced our venue design, event planning, and community building initiatives.
Read the Full StudyIn collaboration with sports nutritionists, we've developed a research-backed menu designed to enhance gaming performance. Our studies show that specific combinations of nutrients can improve reaction time by up to 12% and extend focus during long gaming sessions. The infamous "Chicken Road Wings" recipe was developed through this research, balancing protein, complex carbohydrates, and brain-boosting compounds.
Our kitchen team works with nutritional experts to continue refining our menu based on the latest cognitive enhancement research. Monthly food labs allow members to participate in blind taste tests of new items being developed, combining scientific approach with customer preferences to create the ultimate gaming fuel.

Initiatives that set Chicken Road apart
Our biannual game development hackathon brings together programmers, artists, and game designers for 48 hours of creative collaboration. Participants work in teams to develop games based on a surprise theme revealed at the start of the event. The most recent jam featured "Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?" as its theme, resulting in 24 unique game interpretations.
Winners receive development grants, mentorship from industry professionals, and the opportunity to showcase their games at Chicken Road venues. Several successful indie titles have emerged from our Game Jam, including the popular mobile game "Road Crosser Tycoon" which has over 2 million downloads.
Next Game JamIn collaboration with renowned game designers, we've developed our own proprietary board game that captures the essence of our brand. "Chicken Road: The Board Game" is a strategic tile-placement game where players compete to build safe paths for chickens while sabotaging opponents' routes. The game has been featured at major board game conventions and received the "Best New Family Game" award at BoardCon 2023.
Each Chicken Road location hosts regular tournaments for our signature game, with regional and national championships offering substantial prizes. The game is available for purchase exclusively at our venues, with all proceeds supporting our scholarship program for aspiring game developers.
Learn About the GameChicken Road is committed to supporting the future of gaming through our annual scholarship program. Each year, we award five $5,000 scholarships to students pursuing education in game development, esports management, or related fields. Recipients also receive mentorship from our network of industry professionals and internship opportunities at our corporate headquarters.
Scholarship funds come from a portion of every membership fee and special events throughout the year, including our annual charity stream that has raised over $50,000 in its most recent iteration. Applications open each January, with awards announced during our anniversary celebration in April.
Scholarship InformationOur custom mobile application enhances the Chicken Road experience by allowing members to reserve gaming stations, order food directly to their station, track gaming statistics, and participate in our loyalty program. The app's "Game Matchmaker" feature helps solo visitors find others interested in the same games, facilitating new friendships and gaming partnerships.
The app also includes exclusive mobile mini-games themed around our brand, with in-app achievements unlocking real-world rewards at our venues. Regular updates add new features based on member feedback, making the app an ever-evolving extension of the Chicken Road experience.

What started as five friends regularly playing Valorant at our original location has evolved into one of the most promising esports teams in the region. Team Crossing practiced exclusively at Chicken Road facilities, utilizing our high-performance setups and coaching connections to rapidly improve their skills.
After winning several of our in-house tournaments, the team entered regional competitions and began attracting attention from sponsors. Chicken Road provided initial sponsorship, helping the team attend their first major tournament where they placed in the top four. Today, Team Crossing competes professionally with multiple corporate sponsors while still using Chicken Road as their primary practice facility.
Their success inspired our formal esports development program, which now supports promising players with coaching, equipment access, and competition opportunities.
Sarah K. was a regular at our Tuesday board game nights, often bringing prototype games she designed for feedback. Our Board Game Development Program provided her with resources, mentorship from established designers, and a community of playtesters who helped refine her concepts.
Her game "Chicken Conundrum" – initially prototyped during one of our game design workshops – caught the attention of a publisher who visited our annual Board Game Creator Showcase. After securing a publishing deal, Sarah's game has sold over 25,000 copies worldwide and won two industry awards for innovative mechanics.
Sarah now leads our Board Game Incubator program, helping other aspiring designers navigate the journey from concept to published game. Her success story demonstrates how Chicken Road functions not just as a gaming venue but as a launchpad for creative talent in the gaming industry.
Recognizing the educational potential of gaming environments, we launched an after-school program targeting underserved communities. The program provides free access to our facilities, educational gaming content, and instruction in programming, digital art, and game design fundamentals.
Since the program's inception three years ago, over 500 students have participated, with documented improvements in computer literacy, problem-solving skills, and interest in STEM subjects. Several program graduates have gone on to pursue computer science or game development in college, with four currently receiving our educational scholarships.
This initiative has become a model for other gaming venues looking to make positive community impacts while also building their customer base for the future. The program continues to expand with additional corporate sponsorships and volunteer instructors from local tech companies.
In partnership with local therapeutic professionals, Chicken Road developed specialized gaming programs for individuals with various disabilities and special needs. These sessions utilize adaptive controllers, specially selected games, and trained facilitators to create positive, accessible gaming experiences.
Our monthly "Adaptive Gaming Days" have created a supportive community for families affected by autism, ADHD, and physical disabilities. Parents report significant social development benefits for their children, who find the structured gaming environment more approachable than typical social settings.
This program has received recognition from healthcare organizations and disability advocacy groups, leading to expanded funding and the development of training resources for other gaming venues interested in implementing similar initiatives.

Our founders met during a game development hackathon where they created a quirky game called "Why Did the Chicken Cross the Road?" The game became a local hit, and when they decided to open a gaming venue, the name "Chicken Road" was a natural choice. It represents our playful approach to gaming and our belief that gaming should be accessible to everyone, just like the classic joke that appeals to all ages. The chicken mascot and road-themed elements throughout our venue are constant reminders of our humble and humorous origins.
